The Inner Compass Tool
“You cannot change what is happening around you until you begin to change what is happening within you.”
1. What am I feeling?
Don't judge it. Don't fix it.
Simply acknowledge it.
2. What am I believing about this?
This is where we discover whether fear, old identities, people-pleasing, control or ego has taken the driver's seat.
3. What would love choose here?
Not what would fear choose.
Not what would keep everyone else happy.
Not what would give you control.
What would love choose?
That third question creates a beautiful little space between what happens to us and how we choose to respond.
Your Inner Compass: The Choice That Changes Everything
There are moments in life when we desperately want something outside of ourselves to change.
We want someone to understand us.
We want circumstances to be different.
We want an answer.
We want certainty.
We want life to finally cooperate with the vision we have held so deeply within our hearts.
But what if the greatest transformation doesn't begin with changing what is happening around us?
What if it begins with changing what is happening within us?
One of the most powerful principles of personal development is this:
You cannot always choose what happens to you, but you can choose what happens within you.
That space between what happens and how we respond is where our personal power lives.
And sometimes, finding that power requires nothing more complicated than stopping for a moment and listening to your inner compass.
🌿 The Inner Compass Tool
The next time something outside of you creates fear, frustration, disappointment or uncertainty, pause.
Take a breath.
Then ask yourself three simple questions.
1. What am I feeling?
Name it.
"I'm afraid."
"I'm angry."
"I'm disappointed."
"I'm uncertain."
"I'm trying to control this."
There is no need to criticize yourself for what you feel.
Feelings are information, not instructions.
You can honour what you're feeling without allowing that feeling to decide your next move.
2. What am I believing about this?
This question can change everything.
Perhaps you're believing:
"I have to fix this."
"What if everything goes wrong?"
"They won't be happy with me."
"I should have done better."
"I can't trust this."
"I need to know what's going to happen."
Sometimes the circumstance isn't what is creating our suffering.
Sometimes it is the story we have attached to the circumstance.
And once we can see the story, we have the opportunity to choose a different one.
3. What would love choose here?
This is my favourite question.
Not, What would fear choose?
Not, What would my old identity choose?
Not, What would make everyone else happy?
Not even, What would give me the most control?
Simply ask:
What would love choose?
Perhaps love would choose a boundary.
Perhaps love would choose patience.
Perhaps love would choose to speak.
Perhaps love would choose silence.
Perhaps love would choose to let go.
Perhaps love would choose to trust.
Perhaps love would simply choose to take the next small step.
There isn't always an immediate answer.
And that's okay.
Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is become quiet enough to hear ourselves again.
You don't have to control the outside to find peace within.
Life will continue to bring unexpected circumstances.
People will make choices we don't understand.
Plans will change.
Doors will close.
New doors will open.
There will be seasons of certainty and seasons of not knowing.
Our power isn't found in controlling all of it.
Our power is found in remembering that we get to choose who we are within it.
So the next time life feels like it is pulling you away from yourself, pause.
Breathe.
Feel.
Listen.
And ask:
What am I feeling?
What am I believing?
What would love choose here?
That tiny pause can become a doorway.
A doorway from fear into trust.
From reaction into response.
From control into surrender.
From the outside world back into yourself.
And sometimes, that is where the change you've been waiting for begins.
Come home to yourself.
Your inner compass has been there all along.
